Bryggen in Bergen

The world famous Bryggen in Bergen, also known as the German dock, is the colourful old Hanseatic wharf and buildings in Bergen Norway.
The Hanseatic league established a trading centre in Bergen around 1350AD and the warehouses were filled with stockfish from northern Norway, and cereal from Europe. See one of the best known urban areas from the Middle Age which is also a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

Bergenhus Fortress is one of the oldest preserved fortresses in Norway.
Imagine how life was here when we walk inside the thick walls of Bergenhus Fortress. Bergen used to be the most important city in Norway, and this fortress was the main seat of the Norwegian King in the 12th century. In the late middle age Norway was in a union with Denmark, the king did not live here during this periode but the fortress was still an important administrative and political centre.
The oldest building you can admitre today is the Håkon's Hall, built around 1250 by King Håkon Håkonsson. The 2 most symbolic buildings are Håkon's Hall and the Rosenkrantz Tower which is a medieval tower built around 1270.
The Germans used Bergenhus Fortress as their headquarters during World War II, today you can see a big bunker which is a visible reminder of this period.

Church of Saint Mary, Mariakirken

The oldest church in Bergen and is a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture. If you want to go inside its an entrance fee of NOK50 per person, but it is also nice to see from outside. Its a quiet spot in the middle of the city centre.

Skansen with a view of Bergen City

Walk the zigzagging road to Skansen and enjoy the view of Bergen city. Its uphill so you need to be medium fit to do the walk. We will also pass the old charming wooden fire-watchers station at Skansen.

If you feel energic it's possible to continue up to Fjellveien and get a great overview of Sandviken and Bergen centre.

The Localist must respond within 48 hours. We authorize your card for the full amount, but you will not be charged for the activity until the Localist has accepted the booking.
